How to install PVC Floor tiles perfectly?

Are you on the lookout for an easy, inexpensive, and faster way to restore your flooring? Then the perfect choice for you are PVC tiles. PVC tiles, which are water-resistant and have a very low and soft profile, come in different sizes and patterns. They are not easy to break and are extremely easy to fix. These tiles can spruce up anywhere from the living room to kitchen to bathroom and even on wet areas.

We will discuss here the step-by-step procedure of installing PVC floor tiles. It requires only a couple of days to install the PVC tiles with the right tools and basic know-how. Above all it depends on the size of the room as well.

Before Installation

Before the installation of PVC floor tiles, it’s always recommended to purchase some extra tiles in order to cater for the waste during cuttings.

It’s important to get the following tools ready before starting the installation.

  • Steel Ruler
  • Hammer
  • Razor Knife
  • Small Container
  • Square Set
  • Steel Scraper
  • Drill

What to keep in mind before installing PVC Tiles?

  • Before getting started with the installation of PVC floor tiles, make sure the floors are even. If not, it can be done with construction placed used for building floors.
  • Always keep in mind to add 10 cm extra to the length of the PVC sheet before cutting.
  • Rolled PVC sheets should be kept open at least 34 hours before the start of installation.
  • The temperature of the surface should be 18 degrees minimum.
  • The floor base where installation is going to be carried out should be neat, clean, even and dry
  • Even though thick PVC tiles work well on uneven floors, the installation on it is difficult.
  • It’s important not to have any joint in the center of the room while deciding the flooring width.

If the room is equipped with floor heating, ensure the floor heating will not increase the temperature of PVC to above 30 degrees.

How to prepare the base?

Before you begin with the installation of PVC floor tiles, make sure the base is neat, clean, even strong and dry. It’s never mandatory that you need to take out the old floor cover before installing the PVC floor tiles. If the old floor is strong and even, you can directly begin with the installation process meaning the old floors can be excellent bases.

Since PVC sheets are very thin, uneven spots can be easily noticed. Hence fixing the floor base if required is important. As part of fixing the floor, any cracks or hollow spots should be filled using a filling mixture and the areas that are protruded should be cut off. In case of having uneven floors, it can be covered using plywood sheets.

Plywood sheets are laid with screws and later coated with base paint to prevent the plywood from absorbing any glue. Usage of nails have to be avoided as there are chances of it coming out while the floor moves. A minimum gap of 10mm between the base floor and wall have to be maintained. This eliminates the chances of base floor curving upwards when there is any change in moisture.

Removing old PVC flooring is pretty simple. One option is to lay an old Vinyl cover on the floor. In the case of glued flooring, simply make random cuts and take it off. Then you can remove the glue using a scraper or hot air gun.

Installing PVC floor tiles

  • PVC floor tiles have to be cut in exact measurements since they don’t stretch. Making wrong cuts can make the installation hard or even impossible. Hence its recommended to create a layout of the room by sketch including each and every detail including the location of the joints. It’s important to decide on the joints at locations where they are not visible. If the area is small, stencil made out of newspapers can be used to cut the PVC tiles.
  • Incases of floors having several PVC sheets, make sure you cut them with 10 cm extra length followed by numbering them. In patterned floors, it has to be remembered to match the sheets with patterns. In this case, the joints are to be cut in an overlapping method.
  • The PVC sheets have to be overlapped with a minimum 2-3 cm and then make a cut through both the sheets to get the perfect joint.
  • The floor has to be cleaned well with the help of a vacuum cleaner. With the use of a filing scraper, apply glue. Place the PVC sheets and smoothen it from inside out to remove any air bubbles present. Check for any glue popping out of the attached tile as it has to be removed before the glue dries up.
  • Upon finishing the entire floor, the excess parts of vinyl tiles have to be cut off. These excessive parts have to be pushed to the corner and later cut at 45 degrees with the help of a precision square.
  • Remember to cut holes for any wires or pipes that come out from the surface. Make sure the cuts should be small in size in comparison to the object size. It can be extended using a hot air gun. This makes the vinyl stay on it tightly.
  • Walk on the new floor only after 24 hours.
